Sortavala's largest private home, built by pharmacist Erik O. Relander between 1838 and 1840, was located at the corner of Raatihuoneenkatu and Kisamäenkatu. In addition to serving as the residence of the Relander family, the building also housed a pharmacy. In 1898, the Relander heirs sold the building and the pharmacy to Norwegian-born pharmacist Sven Holst. In 1918 Holst sold the pharmacy to pharmacist V. Durchmann (later Turkama) who moved it to the corner of Karjalankatu and Valamonkatu. In 1939 the house was inhabited by the former pharmacist and his son Ragnar, who studied medicine in Helsinki and, after his graduation, returned to Sortavala to become the local GP. Like so many others, the Relander building was destroyed in a Winter War air raid on 2 February 1940.
